Artist’s Reflection:

β€œI didn’t know it was the beginning when I made it.

There was no grand plan for the marks. No signature style I was trying to develop. I certainly wasn’t thinking about all the paintings that might come after it. I was just following something that felt good. One small mark, then another, then another. Repetition becoming rhythm. Rhythm becoming form.

This was the first painting where those little marks appeared. The ones I would eventually call tic-tacs. They have followed me through different subjects, palettes, seasons and versions of myself ever since.

Looking at it now, I can see so much of what would come later already hiding in here. The figures. The negative space. The colour. The obsession with tiny individual marks somehow becoming something much larger when they gather together.

Maybe that’s why I’ve kept it in my private collection all this time.

It feels less like an old painting and more like evidence of the moment I stumbled onto my own visual language before I had the words to explain it.

And now, finally, I think I’m ready to let it belong to someone else.

In the Beginning
The very first tic-tac painting.
Released from my private collection.”
