“This painting started with no real agenda beyond wanting to paint three women in turtlenecks, which, honestly, might be reason enough.
I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about what makes work cohesive. What makes it recognizable. What makes it mine. And lately I’ve been much more interested in the question of what happens when I stop trying to answer that before I begin.
There is something about these three that feels familiar to me even though I don’t know exactly who they are. They’re together, but each seems completely contained within herself. There’s intimacy without performance. Nobody is smiling for you. Nobody is particularly interested in being looked at. The woman in the middle has quite literally decided the person beside her is furniture.
And I love that.
I keep noticing that the women I paint rarely offer themselves up easily. Their eyes wander. They side-eye. They slump. They look bored, suspicious, tired, amused, somewhere else entirely. Their faces aren’t invitations. There’s a kind of interiority to them that I’m becoming increasingly interested in. They get to exist without explaining themselves.
Even the turtlenecks feel strangely relevant to that. They cover the throat, the place we associate with voice and expression, while the faces and especially the eyes are doing all the talking. Maybe that’s something. Maybe I just really like turtlenecks.
I’m also letting myself become less precious about beauty. I don’t necessarily want these women to be beautiful in the conventional sense. I want them to feel human enough to recognize and strange enough to make you look twice. A little awkward. A little uncanny. Like there’s a story happening between them that we’ve arrived halfway through and they have absolutely no intention of filling us in.
Maybe that’s what I’m most interested in right now: making paintings that don’t explain themselves too quickly.
For now, they’re simply The Turtleneck Trio.
And I think they know something we don’t.”
This original 12" × 12" painting is sealed with a protective matte varnish. It is presented as a floating mount in a wooden bobbin-detail frame, ready to hang straight out of the box.
