Artist’s Reflection:
“For a long time, I think I misunderstood what it meant to be feminine.
I thought it was something you performed. Something measured against how pleasing, beautiful, soft, desirable, accommodating or put-together you could manage to be. A collection of expectations that were somehow presented as inherent, despite the fact that most of us had been taught them.
Lately, I’ve been much more interested in the version that exists underneath all of that.
The woman who takes up space without wondering whether she has earned it. Who rests when she is tired. Changes her mind. Wears the ridiculous coat. Stays for another coffee. Makes things. Wants things. Says no. Says yes. Allows herself to be complicated, contradictory, sensual, strange, powerful, soft, loud, quiet, or entirely unavailable depending on the day.
There is something divine to me about a woman who belongs to herself.
The women in this series aren’t intended to represent one particular version of femininity. In many ways, they are little studies of freedom. They lounge, smoke, swim, wait, stare back. They occupy their bodies and their environments without explanation. Some are elegant. Some are odd. Some seem deeply unimpressed.
I love them for that.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become less interested in becoming the woman I thought I was supposed to be and much more curious about the woman who was there before I learned to edit her.
Divine Feminine is an exploration of her.
Not femininity as perfection.
Femininity as permission.”
